Touching Hearts at Home Karaoke for a Cause
Join us for an unforgettable night of music, laughter, and giving back — all to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
When you laugh, it helps rid your body of stress hormones that increase inflammation. In the process, it helps your immune system work effectively. It improves your mood and can help ease the pain. Laughter is the best medicine, but how do you get your mom to embrace joy?
It’s time to play games. Pick something upbeat that allows you to laugh. Pick a board game like Apples to Apples, where the goal is to fill in the blanks using word cards in your hand. The funnier your answer is to the judge, the higher your chances of winning.
If your mom doesn’t have board games around, it’s okay. Grab a dictionary and play “Dictionary.” In this game, you take turns picking words you don’t know, and players make up definitions. The winner is chosen from the humorous, wacky, or downright absurd definitions that are given.
Dancing is an excellent form of exercise. It also has a way of making you feel happy. Turn on some of your mom’s favorite dance music. She might enjoy tapping her toes to music from the 1950’s. She may find modern music from artists like Shakira is more invigorating.
If she’s hesitant to dance, consider a video Zumba lesson. It’s short sessions of exercise to dance music that may appeal to her. Either way, as she moves, her mood will improve.
Head outside for a change of atmosphere. Sometimes, a walk outside in the sun is enough to improve your mood. If your mom can’t walk far, sit outside and read or enjoy the warmth of the sun and the sounds of nature.
Could your mood be impacting your mom’s emotional status? If you’re sad, angry, or moody, your mom may be picking up on it. Work on being happier to improve her emotional outlook.
If you haven’t had a break in a long time, elder care services ensure you get the break you need. Elder care aides take over with daily routines that help her out, and you take a break.
Keep your mom upbeat and happy by making sure she avoids the everyday situations that can lead to unhappiness. If she struggles to shop for and cook healthy meals, arrange meal preparation services from a senior care agency. If she doesn’t have friends around and is often lonely, look into regular companionship visits from local elder care aides.
