Several health issues can impact mobility as you age. Some of the most common are arthritis, osteoporosis, and bone fractures. When your mom’s mobility is changing, what can you do to help her adjust to her changing abilities? Consider hiring senior home care providers to help with her issues.
When you’re out walking with your mom, as hard as it is, slow down. Walk at her pace and make sure you’re acting like it’s normal to walk at that speed. If she makes a comment about being too slow, tell her you don’t think it’s slow at all. If you make it seem normal, she won’t be as stressed.
Choose areas where walking will be easier. Instead of an unpaved forest path, look for a waterfront boardwalk or paved walking trail. If she can still ride a bike, rent electric bikes for the day and have her join you on a bike ride. Start off taking short trips and extend them after that.
At least once a week, offer to drive your mom to her grocery store or any other businesses she needs. If she’s unable to drive or has a hard time turning her head to check her blindspot, it’s time for someone else to drive.
Has your mom’s doctor mentioned the benefits of physical therapy? If your mom’s mobility is impacted after a bone fracture or due to arthritis, physical therapy can help her regain balance and strength. It’s worth the time if her doctor will give her a referral.
Would your mom find it easier to take walks outside if she had a cane? If so, invest in one. Walkers and wheelchairs are other mobility aids that can help your mom get around the neighborhood or her home.
Even with a loss of mobility, your mom can still move around. Add safety features to her home that help her move around her home. Grab bars and handrails are important.
Rearrange furniture so that it’s not in her way. If she has an ottoman that juts out into her path to the bathroom, move it. Arrange key pieces of furniture like her favorite armchair, her bed, and dining room furniture so that her path is clear. Try moving from a bedroom to the bathroom and living room to kitchen and dining room to make sure nothing is in the way.
