Easy Ways Seniors Can Stay Hydrated

Now that the weather is getting chilly, seniors may stop drinking as much water as they normally drink when the weather is warm. When it’s cold out, a tall glass of cold water isn’t as appealing as it is when it’s warm out. But it’s very important for seniors to continue drinking water all day, so they don’t become dehydrated. Dehydration is a huge problem for seniors. Some estimates say 90% of seniors are in some stage of dehydration every day. Here are some easy ways seniors can stay hydrated when the weather is cooling down:

Drink Herbal Tea

When cold water isn’t appealing, switch to hot water. Herbal teas are delicious and make drinking more water delicious. There are hundreds of different kinds of herbal teas, so seniors will never get bored. And herbal teas have no caffeine or other ingredients that seniors need to worry about. For a fun experience, seniors should try making blooming tea in a glass pot. Blooming tea blooms like a flower as the tea steeps, and with a glass pot, the lovely flower looks like it’s bursting to life. Blooming tea makes the act of having tea a feast for the senses.

Make Fruit Water

Another way to encourage seniors to drink more water is to get an infusion pitcher and make fruit water. An infusion pitcher has a long slender tube with openings in it that sits in the middle of the pitcher. Your senior loved one or their home care service provider can put cut up fruit, cucumbers, or a mixture of fruits and vegetables into the infusion tube. Fill the pitcher with water and put it in the fridge. The fruit and vegetables will seep into the water, providing natural flavor, vitamins and minerals.

Have More Soups And Stews

Soups and stews are the best foods when the weather starts to get cold. And since they are water based, they are also hydrating. Home care services make it easy for seniors to make soups from scratch and enjoy delicious slow-cooked stews. There’s nothing like a hot steaming mug of soup on a cold day, and it’s just an added bonus that it will help your senior parent stay hydrated.

Eat Water Filled Fruits and Vegetables

Your senior parent doesn’t have to drink to stay hydrated. Eating fruits and vegetables packed with water, as well as vitamin and minerals, will also keep your senior parent hydrated. Vegetables like celery, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, and zucchini are packed with water. So are blueberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, and citrus fruits. Eating more of these kinds of fruits and vegetables will help seniors stay hydrated, without having to drink a lot of extra water. And fruits and vegetables make delicious healthy snacks for seniors, especially when paired with peanut butter or some type of dip. If your senior parent doesn’t like drinking water, there are other options that will help them stay hydrated and healthy.
