Can You Really Do Anything about Stress?
Life brings stress and so does caregiving. But there are some changes you can make to your approach to caregiving that can help you to experience reduced stress levels. You might not get rid of it entirely, but you can certainly make some headway.
Look at Your Morning Routine
How your day starts is often how it goes forward. That might sound overly simplified, but it can be true. When your day starts out feeling rushed and hectic, you’re more likely to carry that feeling with you all day. If you start your day feeling in charge and in control of what’s happening, you’re more likely to hang onto those feelings instead. Your morning routines can help you to start out your day on the right foot.
Build Margins into Your Day
When your day is booked solid from sunup to sundown, how do you feel? You probably feel tired and stressed and like you’re missing some things here and there. When you build in smaller breaks or margins into your day, you’re giving yourself a chance to catch your breath. That can be a huge help to you as you’re trying to keep all your ducks in a row.
Take Time Away
It’s not just those little breaks, though. You also need bigger breaks that allow you to do slightly more than just catch your breath. Respite time allows you to take time away while also knowing that your senior is in good hands. If you don’t take those longer spans of time away, you’re going to be more susceptible to both mental and physical health issues. That’s ultimately bad for your senior as well as for you.
Simple Affirmations Can Serve as Anchors
Using affirmations may not come naturally to you at first, but they can be a great anchor for your day. These are short phrases or sentences that help you to remember what your focus is, especially when you’re tired and stressed. Keeping your affirmations as simple as you can makes them easy to remember and it also ensures that they’re easy for you to repeat as needed.
One of the best ways you can start to implement all of these ideas is to make sure you’ve got help available when you need it. Home care services can offer your elderly family member hands-on assistance with tasks and they can help you with respite as well.
