Ways Companion Care at Home Helps Seniors to Avoid Falls
Fall prevention is a big part of what companion care at home does to help aging adults stay safe. They…
Most people, when they think about home care services as an option, either for themselves, an aging parent, spouse, or other loved one, consider it because of the physical support it offers. In many cases, seniors or disabled adults need help with basic tasks around the house.
They need assistance with ADLs, or Activities of Daily Living. These might include bathing, toileting, getting dressed, preparing meals, light housekeeping, doing the laundry, going to doctors’ appointments, or even doing shopping, among other tasks.
Home care services are the best option, hands down, and while an experienced aide can assist with many of these tasks and much more, they also provide another incredible benefit: companionship.
Is companionship reason enough to hire a home care services aide?
Medicaid is not going to reimburse for services provided by a home care aide that basically account for companionship, but a person who is paying privately, on their own, can certainly hire a home care services aide specifically or even solely for companionship. However, that is rarely the case.
In most cases, seniors, disabled adults, or family of these individuals are going to look into home care services as an option for other things first and foremost. In many cases, a client will need help with mobility. They might have difficulty due to limited mobility getting out of bed, getting dressed, taking a shower, going to the bathroom, and so forth.
When people have difficulty with these tasks, though, and they are living alone, they often experience feelings of isolation and loneliness. That’s where companionship can come into play and be a significant factor in a person’s life.
How can companionship be beneficial?
Human beings are social creatures. We simply do better when we are surrounded by others or at least have the opportunity to have conversations, play games, go for walks, and feel connected with others.
For an aging senior whose family doesn’t live anywhere close, whose friends are all struggling with the same issues in life or who have passed away, it can be lonely. The companionship that a home care services aide can offer is truly beneficial in innumerable ways.
It’s important not to discount the value of companionship for aging seniors, especially those who are living alone and struggling with mobility and daily tasks. It may not be the primary reason to look into home care services as an option, but it is truly one of the great ancillary benefits of experienced home care support services.
