Learn to Overcome Caregiver Stress Before It Builds Up
One thing you may need to accept is that even though you are more than willing to help your aging mother or father, it is leading to increased stress in your life. You may not think of yourself as a caregiver, but if you are helping anyone in your family maintain daily life, keeping up with these Activities of Daily Life (ADLs), you are, in effect, a caregiver.
As a family caregiver, you will experience stress. It’s not a question of if you experience it, but when and how intense it becomes in your life. That’s because you have other responsibilities to worry about; everything you add onto your own responsibilities is going to increase stress, whether it’s helping your teenage children, working on an extra project at work that requires you to stay late and even work weekends, and so forth.
How can stress affect your body?
Stress can affect your mental frame of mind, personal relationships, and your physical health. Prolonged stress can lead to anxiety. Anxiety can lead to panic attacks. Prolonged stress can also increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious health issues. When you are dealing with caregiver stress on a regular basis, it can also cause resentment and anger within you.
You might feel resentful of a sibling who also lives close by, but who isn’t lifting a finger to help. You can feel resentful of that aging parent or other individual who depends on you, especially if they are placing more and more demands on you, getting frustrated and ornery, or even combative.
The best way to overcome caregiver stress is to ask for help.
You may not think you can have anyone to ask of for help, but in most communities across the country, you do. Homecare support services is one of the best options to consider when you, as a caregiver, is feeling overwhelmed with stress, pressure, and anxiety.
Even if this aging senior or other individual in your life was adamant about not depending on a homecare agency or ‘total stranger’ coming into their house to help them, it’s important to understand the value these services offer.
Contact our agency, sit down with an administrator, and learn about all the wonderful benefits that experience can provide. You can still be there for this caregiver, but when you have somebody else helping — either in the morning to help them get ready for the day, in the evening, or at different times throughout the week — you can alleviate a tremendous amount of stress from your life.
