Keeping Your Loved One's Hair Looking Nice
As a person ages, their hair changes just like many parts of the body. It changes in color, texture, and amount, for both men and women. While men may be prepared to lose hair as they age, many women are not prepared for their hair to thin and it can affect how they feel about how they look. If your loved one is losing some of her hair and needs some help managing it and making it look nice, having a personal care at home provider help with hair care may be one solution.
A personal care at home provider can help make sure she washes properly and can help her style it before she heads out to visit with friends or family. There are also steps your loved one can take on her own, as well as with her personal care at home provider.
Reduce how much she washes her hair. There is no exact number of times your loved one should wash her hair, but if it hasn’t gotten dirty or oily, waiting one more night to have her personal care at home provider wash her hair may help it maintain some of its moisture and flexibility. Washing too frequently can cause hair to become brittle and dry. Washing every other day or every third day works well for many seniors, just make sure she washes her scalp at least twice a week to keep that skin clean.
Eat plenty of protein. Hair is made of protein strands. A lack of protein in your loved one’s diet, may be causing more hair to fall out since the follicles are protein based. Your loved one should make sure her diet contains plenty of green leafy vegetables like spinach, eggs, avocados, and fresh fish to keep her hair healthy. Also, foods rich in vitamin C, like berries and citrus fruits, can help her body use that protein to create collagen, which will strengthen hair as well.
Get a new hairstyle. It might be time for your loved one to get a new hairstyle that will better show off the locks she has and not draw attention to the ones she doesn’t. Having a hair stylist who is trained in elderly hair care is a great way to start. It might be hard to choose a new hairstyle but once it’s done, your loved one may never want to go back.
Reduce the amount of heat used on the hair. Look for a new style that doesn’t require a lot of damaging heat to be used to style the hair. Blow dryers, curling wands, and flat irons all do damage to the hair so if possible, help your loved one find an easy-to-maintain style that doesn’t require daily styling. If she does need to use a heating element, help her find a good product to protect her hair when using them.
Helping your loved one continue to love her hair will boost her confidence and improve how she feels about herself so it’s worth the investment.
