Mind Matters: Nurturing Brain Health Together
Brain health is a huge part of overall well-being for aging adults. When their brains aren’t as healthy as they…
Even though a family caregiver may have felt this was his or her responsibility to look after an aging parent or a loved one, that doesn’t mean the job is going to be easy. It’s important to realize that this is a job, though.
Most family caregivers don’t look at it that way. They see it as their responsibility, their duty, and think everyone in their family simply expects them to do this.
However, it is a job.
And, it should be treated as such. That means when a family caregiver is expected to be there at the elderly person’s house at a specific time on a certain day, they should be there at that time on that day.
Unfortunately, it’s far too easy to stop by “when you have time” but that doesn’t offer the elderly person the benefit they deserve.
On top of all that, caregiver stress is real and it affects the vast majority of family caregivers who are sacrificing their time, work, and relationships to be there for this individual. When a person is feeling overwhelmed with stress and anxiety, as a family caregiver they may not feel there are any other options. There are.
Home care is one of the best options for aging seniors.
November is National Family Caregivers Month and for those individuals who are supporting elderly parents, a spouse, a disabled adult child, or somebody else they love, they may have heard about home care before, but might not realize just how valuable it is.
Home care is one of the best options because in most cases these aides come with experience and support. When hired through an agency, most of the caregivers working for these agencies have worked with other seniors in need.
They also have valuable resources and support through that agency. That means if they have questions, concerns, need time off because of a sickness or other issue, the agency can provide another home care aide to step in.
Family caregivers often don’t have that kind of support. If the family caregiver is sick or has a pressing deadline at work, it’s usually the elderly person who needs to wait. That’s not valuable and beneficial to aging seniors who need care at home.
Right now is the best time to look for home care.
The holidays are coming up and that means home care will be at an increased demand, especially around Christmas and New Year’s. Look for home care now and find the availability needed to support this family caregiver and senior during a difficult time.
