Delicious Sugar-Free Summer Desserts For Seniors
Picnics and barbecues can be a minefield for seniors with diabetes or medical conditions that put them on a strict diet. Estimates are that about 33% of seniors have diabetes. For seniors with diabetes attending summer get togethers can be tough because they can’t have any of the sugar-laden treats that are served at picnics, barbecues, and summer gatherings of all time. Seniors that have diabetes or seniors who just prefer to eat light can enjoy these sugar-free treats this summer. These can be prepared with the help of senior home care providers.
Seniors can bring one of these desserts, prepared with a senior home care aide to parties so that they can be sure there will be at least one thing they can eat:
Cottage Cheese Fruit Salad
Cottage cheese is refreshing on a hot summer day. And it’s packed with more protein than a hamburger. This fruit salad is easy to make and delicious for breakfast, as a side dish, as a main course, or as a dessert. To make it just combine one container of cottage cheese with one container of whipped cream or whipped topping. Add in half a packet of sugar-free instant gelatin powder in any berry flavor. Stir everything together. Then add in raspberries, strawberries, or a variety of seasonal berries.
Watermelon Melon Fiesta
Watermelon is a classic dessert for the summer because it’s sweet and refreshing. It’s also extremely low in calories which makes it a great choice for seniors. To make a melon salad cut the top off a watermelon lengthwise. Hollow out the melon with a melon baller, making small balls of watermelon. Fill the interior of the watermelon shell with sliced cantaloupe, honeydew, and other melons. Add back in the balled watermelon to make a breezy refreshing treat.
Fruit Popsicles
Who doesn’t love a popsicle on a hot day? Popsicles are perfect for seniors because they are cooling, hydrating, and sweet. They’re also easy for seniors to eat. Seniors can make their own sugar-free popsicles by filling a popsicle mold with fruit puree, fruit juice, and chunks of fruit. Then freeze. There are endless combinations of fruit and juices so that seniors can change the recipe a little every time.
Low Carb-Cheesecake
Cheesecake is something that most diabetic seniors assume they can’t have. But low-carb cheese cake is made with almond flour and other flours to decrease the glycemic load of the dish. A thick cheesecake with almond flour crust topped with fresh fruit is a delicious treat.
Going to summer gatherings can be awkward for seniors who have diabetes. But summer picnics and barbecues don’t have to be difficult for seniors. Seniors can have a senior home care provider help them make a dessert that seniors will be able to eat if they have special health considerations like having diabetes. When seniors show up to the party everyone will want to try the delicious sugar-free dessert that they made. And seniors who can’t have sugar for one reason or another will be grateful.
