Caregiving Journey: Laura’s Story
Six Years of Compassion, Connection, and Purpose
At Touching Hearts at Home Rochester, we believe caregiving is more than a service — it’s a calling. It’s a promise to be present for someone who needs more than just help, but connection. For Laura Snyder, caregiving is second nature — it’s how she lives her life, day in and day out.
With six years of dedicated service, Laura’s story is one of heart, resilience, and a deep respect for the older population — a community she cherishes and belongs to herself.
A Personal Connection Sparked the Journey
Laura’s inspiration to become a caregiver was born out of love and experience. Her mother had Alzheimer’s, and through that deeply personal chapter, Laura developed a profound empathy for the challenges older adults face. That experience didn’t just lead her into caregiving — it shaped how she approaches it.
“I know what it’s like to watch someone you love need more support. And I know how important it is to have someone by their side who truly cares,” she shares.
Finding Joy — Even in the Hardest Days
One of Laura’s regular clients faces daily challenges due to vision loss, and yet their time together is filled with creativity, laughter, and joy. Whether they’re sharing a conversation, playing music, or finding alternative ways to enjoy games, Laura has a motto she loves to share during their visits:
“Today, we make our own fun!”
She knows the importance of adapting — not just activities, but the energy in the room. “Sometimes you just need to meet people where they are and bring the sunshine with you.”
A Listening Ear and an Open Heart
Building trust doesn’t happen overnight — but Laura’s secret? Listening, respecting boundaries, and simply being present. “Sometimes, clients just need you to sit next to them so they don’t feel alone,” she says. “If they’re open to talking, I love learning about their lives. But if not, I’m happy just to be there.”
It’s this kind of patience, kindness, and quiet companionship that creates real, lasting connections.
The Little Things Make the Biggest Difference
Laura has no doubt that she’s making an impact — and her clients feel it, too. One client without nearby family often tells her she feels like family, and that sentiment is everything. “She says it all the time, and I know how much it means. Just being there, listening, helping — it’s more than a job. It’s a relationship.”
Encouraging clients to try new things can be a challenge, especially when they’re hesitant about group activities. But Laura’s gentle approach — offering to go together, with no pressure — often helps ease them into new experiences. “We’ll check it out, and if you don’t like it, we can leave,” she reassures.
Lessons from a Life of Service
Working with seniors has shaped Laura’s perspective on life, aging, and the importance of compassion. “I’m a senior myself, and this work has reminded me that with all the noise in the world, we need to slow down and be good to each other — especially the most vulnerable.”
She’s learned that our time on earth is limited, and that helping others should be a daily intention. For those considering a career in home care, she offers this timeless advice:
“Be patient, show kindness, and treat people the way you’d want to be treated.”
Why Home Care Matters
Laura is a passionate advocate for in-home care and the dignity it provides. “Seniors don’t want to leave their homes unless they absolutely have to. That’s where Touching Hearts comes in — we help them stay where they’re comfortable, with a little support.”
Whether it’s preparing a warm meal, tidying the home, providing transportation, or just sitting down for a good conversation, caregivers bring both peace of mind and companionship — not only to clients, but to their families as well.
