Caregiving Journey: Mimi J. Kim’s Story

At Touching Hearts at Home of Rochester, our caregivers go beyond just providing support—they bring joy, companionship, and security to the lives of seniors every single day. For Mimi J. Kim, caregiving isn’t just a profession; it’s a purpose-driven journey built on compassion and dedication.

Though Mimi has been with Touching Hearts for just over two months, her passion for home care stems from a lifetime of caring for others. With personal experience supporting her elderly parents, she understands the value of keeping seniors comfortable, safe, and happy in their own homes.

Her story is one of kindness, patience, and a commitment to enriching the lives of every senior she meets.

A Personal Mission: From Family Care to Professional Caregiving

Mimi’s caregiving journey began long before she joined Touching Hearts at Home.

“One of my greatest goals is to make a difference in the lives of others. I have a genuine desire to help those in need and am truly delighted to do so. Before working for Touching Hearts, I had personal experience caring for my elderly parents. The help and companionship I provided to them was so welcome and appreciated. Now, I can provide the same type of care and support for my wonderful clients.”

Caring for her own family showed Mimi just how important home care is—not just for seniors, but for their loved ones as well. Knowing that she plays a role in helping seniors age with dignity and comfort is what makes her work so meaningful.

The Joy in the Small Moments

While some caregivers have a single defining moment that changed their perspective, Mimi treasures the everyday interactions that make caregiving special.

*”There’s not one particular experience for me to highlight. I so value the smiles and warm greetings from my clients when I go to see them. The conversations we have, the activities we do together, the laughter we share, and even the meals we have together are all so meaningful and precious to me.

I am always touched by the words of thanks and appreciation I receive at the end of my shifts. Every experience with each client is unique, and I feel so honored to be welcomed into their homes to help care for their most cherished family members.”*

For Mimi, caregiving isn’t just about tasks—it’s about building meaningful relationships and making each day brighter for her clients.

A Lesson in Adaptability: Understanding Individual Needs

One of the biggest lessons Mimi has learned in her time as a caregiver is that no two clients are the same.

“Every client has different needs and ways of doing things in their daily living routine. To be the best Care Partner, you have to identify what each client needs most to help enrich their lives. You also have to continuously be willing and ready to accommodate the client and their families to be successful in this role.”

Flexibility is key in caregiving—whether it’s adjusting to a client’s preferences, learning their routines, or providing emotional support to their families. Mimi embraces each new challenge with patience and a willingness to learn.

Building Trust: Reliability and Attentiveness

Trust is at the core of any caregiver-client relationship. Mimi believes that consistency and attentiveness are the foundation of trust.

*”I make great efforts to readily be available whenever and wherever needed. I firmly believe that reliability, attentiveness, and consistency are key in building meaningful connections. It’s also important to provide the client with the reassurance that you are there for them, willing to listen and assist them in any way possible.

Of course, staying enthusiastic and putting on a smile goes a long way too!”*

By being present, dependable, and genuinely engaged, Mimi ensures that her clients feel secure, respected, and valued.

Facing Challenges with a Caring Heart

Every caregiver faces unique challenges, and for Mimi, one of the most difficult aspects of her work is caring for clients with dementia.

“There are times when dealing with dementia becomes a challenge. However, after spending quality time with each client, you become familiar with what those specific challenges are. You learn to adjust and overcome these challenges with understanding, patience, and a caring heart.”

Dementia care requires adaptability, emotional resilience, and compassion. By getting to know each client on a personal level, Mimi is able to provide the right support, comfort, and stability they need.

A Special Client: Helping a 99-Year-Old Live Fully

One of Mimi’s most fulfilling experiences has been caring for a 99-year-old client four days a week.

*”I feel that my presence, companionship, and interaction with this client are invaluable. I always try my best to engage in conversation, introduce activities that are designed to stimulate cognitive and motor skills, and provide meaningful interaction.

Admittedly, some days are better than others, but I am confident that the consistency and repetition in taking part in these activities undoubtedly makes a difference. It warms my heart to know that I contribute toward making that difference in her life.”*

This experience reaffirms that home care isn’t just about assisting with daily needs—it’s about providing engagement, companionship, and enrichment to help seniors maintain a high quality of life.

Advice for Future Caregivers: Pursue It for the Right Reasons

For those considering a career in home care, Mimi offers this heartfelt advice:

*”The best advice I could give is to pursue it for the right reasons—that being, because you genuinely want to help enrich the lives of others.

Have an open heart, be understanding, be patient, have compassion, and enjoy the quality time spent with each client. Having this mindset will ultimately help build fond memories and meaningful relationships over time. You’ll also naturally find that you reap the benefits of having rewarding experiences while working in home care.”*

Caregiving isn’t just a job—it’s a commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

A New Perspective on Aging

Working with seniors has given Mimi a deeper appreciation for aging and the challenges it brings.

*”Aging is part of life for everyone. I have become even more empathetic, patient, and understanding while recognizing the cognitive and physical challenges seniors face every day.

Life is valuable and should be enriched and lived to the fullest. I feel blessed to know that I am able to take part in helping to do that for others as well.”*

Aging shouldn’t be feared—it should be honored. Seniors have a wealth of wisdom, experiences, and stories to share, and Mimi embraces every opportunity to help them live with dignity and joy.

Why Home Care Matters: A Message from Mimi

If Mimi could share one message about why home care is essential, it would be this:

*”Home care is crucial in helping our clients live happy, healthy, safe, and fulfilling lives in the comfort of their own homes.

We, as Care Partners, should all strive to provide the best home care possible to help enrich the lives of our wonderful senior community so they can live their best lives under our special care.”*

Home care is about more than just assistance—it’s about empowering seniors to maintain their independence, stay engaged, and receive the compassionate care they deserve.
